Why I Make Art

Dee

Why am I an artist?

I make art because I love the act of creating something that brings joy and peace to my soul, and I certainly hope that my art would bring the same kind of feeling in people who view my work. I was deeply affected and stimulated by creating art at a very young age. I always knew that I wanted to be an artist and make art, which is what I've been doing since I was a kid.

Here are a few reasons why I'm an artist...

It helps me connect with my spiritual side.

I love to paint, draw, and bring 'life' to my paper, canvas, or illustration board.

It helps me see the 'little' things in nature; whether its the soft texture of a flower petal, the way the sky looks before a thunderstorm, or the spectacular palette painted over the trees in the Fall season, my favorite.

I could not imagine (nor would I want to) being anything other than a person who creates art. That's what I am and will always be. I paint 'Art with Spirit.'

How do I use art to express myself?

I use art to express myself because it brings out my sense of wonder and my 'inner child.' I think that's why most of my work is whimsical in nature. Check out my Noah's Art poster to know exactly what I mean!

I use art to express the glory of color; how colors look together, how they make me feel; happy, sad, or healing. Purple is probably my favorite color, as it is truly a healing color. For me, its soothing and peaceful to be around this color and all shades it may possess.

Why people like and buy my art

The first thing that most people who look at my art do is smile and then they start to see the colors and the delightful details. I think it makes them happy and who wouldn't want to be surrounded by something that makes you feel good?

People buy my art because it moves them in some way; they love the colors, it sooths them, they are calming (especially my tropical fish), the design is prefect for their home, or they love the whimsical animals.

In my Art Nouveau paintings of ladies, I've been told how beautiful the eyes are and that people are mesmerized by them. Eyes are my favorite human feature to paint; they leave a lot of the interpretation to your own imagination. Art is so personal. What means one thing to one person, may mean something totally different to another.

How long does it take to make my art?

Well, this question is a tough one as it could be a few days to a few months. It just depends how large and complex the piece is. Monotypes (a one-of-a-kind printmaking process in which an image, pattern, or color composition is painted directly onto an individual plate made of metal, glass, plexiglas, or other material) do not take long at all, and I love the spontaneity of this painting process.

How I make art; The design process

First, I begin with an idea in my head. Then I may do some research on a certain type of animal, if that's what I'm going to paint. After I think about it for awhile, I'll start to lay out the design in pencil on vellum. After I've got the drawing laid out, I transfer it to my illustration board, which is usually cold-press, meaning that it has a slight tooth to it.

Once the transfer process is done, I start to put more detail in lightly with pencil. After I've gotten the drawing more or less to my liking (it always goes through more changes as I paint), I begin to lay in colors. Then I might zero in on a certain part of the painting and take it to the almost finished stage, so I can get an idea of how the overall piece will look.

I always step back at a distance to see if the design is cohesive. This is an important part of the design process because you see things differently close up than you do at a distance. This is the point where I may make some changes.

Sometimes I'll leave the painting for a few days before I work on it again. I always keep the painting out where I can view it. Even if I don't make changes right then, I can make mental or written notes that I refer to when I go back to painting.

This is pretty much the process I use in a nutshell. It's hard to know when a painting is finished. I don't want to over-work it. If I don't see any areas that need something else, then I know its finished.

Oh, just another artbyte of mine; I prefer to paint when its cloudy, foggy, rainy, or snowy out. It just puts me in a more 'creative mood.' I then actually do, "live in a box of paints," (line from a Joni Mitchell song) while I'm creating.

I always listen to music while I paint. It could be anything from Billie Holiday to John Mayer; Dave Matthews, Robben Ford, Harry Nilsson, Nick Drake to Lucinda Williams. I love R&B, jazz violin, classical piano, salsa, zydeco, just to name a few.
